"Pancreatic cancer is a serious disease with poor patient outcome, often as a consequence of late diagnosis in advanced stages. This is in large part due to the lack of diagnostic tools for early detection. To address this deficiency, we have investigated novel molecular near-infrared fluorescent (NIRF) in vivo imaging techniques in clinically relevant mouse models of pancreatic cancer. Genome wide gene expression profiling was used to identify cathepsin cystein proteases and matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) as targets for NIRF imaging.

Pancreatic juice is an ideal specimen for PDAC biomarkers discovery, because it is an exceptionally rich source of proteins released from pancreatic cancer cells.
"Epidemiologic evidence suggests a family history of pancreatic cancer (PC) is a risk factor for the disease, yet the magnitude of risk varies between studies. We performed a systematic review of studies that quantified familial risks of PC, and through a meta-analysis, obtained more precise estimates of familial risk. A MEDLINE search identified published studies that reported relative risks (RR) of PC associated with a family history of the disease. A random effects model was used to summarize study-specific RRs and 95% confidence intervals (CI).

Here, we have used a recombinant scFv antibody microarray in an attempt to classify sera derived from pancreatic adenocarcinoma patients versus healthy subjects. Based on analysis of nonfractionated, directly labeled, whole human serum proteomes we have identified a protein signature based on 19 nonredundant analytes, that discriminates between cancer patients and healthy subjects.
"Pancreatic cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Japan. Small pancreatic cancers have some abnormal findings on ultrasonography, and diagnosis with endosonography is useful. Positron emission tomography and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography are expected to serve as new modalities for the early detection of pancreatic cancer. The identification of high-risk individuals is necessary to perform efficient screening. Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms and chronic pancreatitis are important risk factors for pancreatic cancer."

Subpopulation cells with properties of tumor stem cells were isolated from pancreatic adenocarcinoma cell line PANC-1 according to the cell surface markers CD44 and CD24 by flow cytometry.
